Wakefield Mill - First LEED registered hotel

Wakefield Mill - First LEED registered hotel

New Eco-hotel in the Outaouais to Open July 2011

Wakefield  2011

Wakefield Mill's new 13 room expansion will commemorate its 10th year of operation and open in July with high hopes of being the first LEED Registered hotel ever built in the National Capital Region.

The $3 million expansion project which includes 13 superb new guest rooms, new conference facilities, a second new restaurant (which opened last August), an outdoor swimming pool and a small group spa area will introduce a whole new level of unique experiences to enjoy.

The two primary buildings of the expansion represent a tasteful combination of heritage restoration and contemporary form -- linked by a state-of-the-art environmental standard.

The two-acre site is located 100 meters west of the Mill on property known as the "Miller's House" and includes a reclaimed abandoned highway allowance for visitor parking.

The Miller's House -- said to be the oldest continuous residential structure in Wakefield, and dating back to the 1840's -- will be completely refurbished and become an iconic symbol of rural architecture.

The environmental standards of the new 10,000 square foot building are as thorough as is possible.

Named the "Eco River Lodge", the new building features a passive solar design with a-nearly all-glass south facing 2-story facade.  The ultra-insulated building will be heated and cooled with a 1/2 mile of underground geothermal piping, and topped off with an organic green roof over the conference facilities.

Other environmental features would fill a medium sized binder and they range from locally supplied products and water-efficiency standards to electric plug-ins for cars of the future.

The new facility will also feature river access and complementary canoes and kayaks to those guests who wish to venture into the Gatineau park on water.

When opened, the combined 40 room / 35,000 square foot facility will employ nearly 80 people on a full and part-time basis.
