Wakefield Mill Inn, member of Québec Resorts,
invests in local tourism future
Wakefield, October 22, 2009 - Wakefield Mill innkeepers Robert Milling and Lynn Berthiaume announced a new expansion that will include 13 additional guest rooms, a greenhouse, a new glass bistro sunroom and “destination organic gardens”, featuring arts and culture staging area as a major new tourism draw for the 27 rooms Country Inn and Conference Centre.
“We believe that our future as a tourism destination will increasingly depend on a nature-based experience,” said Milling. “With the announced four-lane extension of Highway 5 to Wakefield, the return of the steam train, and the emergence of a trend toward garden tourism, we believe the time is right to re-invest,” said Milling.
The $2.3 million project is expected to create approximately 20 new jobs within one year of opening, which is expected to be March 2011. Final design for the sunroom has been completed, with site plans and architectural concept design for the guestroom expansion well under way.
“We have tried to focus on our mission of providing a unique and seductive guest experience. This effort is a natural extension of that priority for both our corporate and leisure guests”, explained Milling.
The all-organic gardens will feature heritage perennials, water elements, rock gardens, and pathways with shaded benches/lookouts. The plans also call for organic heirloom vegetable gardens for use by the kitchen at the Wakefield Mill.
“A central feature of this garden tourism approach will be the integration of local art and cultural talent,” said Berthiaume. “The garden and landscape designs will anticipate both commissioned exterior artwork, as well as “staging spaces” for special events such as vernissage or performance theatre/music presentations. The arts community in the region is strong and vibrant,” said Berthiaume. “The best way we can support it is to help provide venues.”

“This investment towards major improvements for The Wakefield Mill Inn is a reflection of the network's dynamism,” explains Sylvie Baril, General Director of Québec Resorts and Country Inns. “Québec Resorts' mission is to provide visitors with a unique holiday experience, and that is exactly what The Wakefield Mill Inn is aiming for with this expansion project and the improvement of its offers.”
